SBA’s are
work based programs for students which combines paid part time
work and
formal industry related
training whilst they are completing a senior secondary certificate.
Students over 15 years of age have the opportunity to gain
a nationally recognised industry qualification while pursuing
the VCE/VCAL.
Although they vary from one industry to another, a typical School
Based Apprenticeship will involve:
Attending a secondary school – Completing
VCE/VCAL subjects.
Paid part-time work with an employer – the time students
spend in work for a SBA may vary from one industry to another
but generally School Based Apprentice will work on average
10 -15 hours per week over the term of the Training Agreement.
The School Based Apprentice will be paid in accordance with
the industries National Training Wage Award.
A training agreement – the training agreement is signed
by the employer and student and is endorsed by the school. The
Training Agreement, which is linked to an industrial award or
agreement, validates the SBA arrangement.
Attending a TAFE or other Registered Training Organisation
(RTO) - School Based Apprentices will be required to undertake
industry training, such as Certificate II in Office Administration,
which is delivered and monitored by a RTO. The RTO will assess
the Apprentice against competencies from the training package.
