The Victorian Tunneling Centre Site Visit

In 2023, Gateway LLEN facilitated a tailored site visit for VCE VM students to tour the Victorian Tunnelling Centre’s state-of-the-art training facilities.

The Victorian Tunnelling Centre was built to support Victorians who want to gain the skills and knowledge required for work on major projects, such as the Metro Tunnel, Suburban Rail Loop, and North East Link. The Victorian Tunnelling Centre is one of only four in the world and the only one that is Australian. Students were given an exclusive look into the Centre, speak with workers, observe processes and participate in interactive activities.

The Challenge

The Victorian Tunnelling Centre was built to support Victorians who want to gain the skills and knowledge required for work on major projects, such as the Metro Tunnel, Suburban Rail Loop, and North East Link.

The aim of this initiative was to give students an exclusive insight into large-scale building projects, as well as hear from those with experience in the sector.

The Result

During the tours, students were able to see and experience the following:

  • Experiencing a life size replica of a mined tunnel and rail/TBM tunnel similar to the Metro Tunnel
  • Getting inside a real Cutterhead and learning how it operates
  • Visiting a refuge chamber and finding out its role on projects
  • VR experience: getting a safety induction and virtually going underground to a work site
  • AR experience: watching a virtual TBM machine in 3D and participating in fire training activities

The tours were led by industry experts with extensive experience and knowledge in civil and tunnelling construction and operations.
