Information for Schools

On the Job Training for Senior Secondary Students

In 2016, Gateway LLEN has been entrusted by the Victorian State Government to facilitate the Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) contract across the local government areas of Manningham, Monash and Whitehorse. The contract provides Gateway the opportunity to facilitate a broad range of SWL weekly and block placements for senior secondary students enrolled in Catholic, Government and Independent schools undertaking VETiS and SBATs as part of their VCE or VCAL studies.

All opportunities are accessible to schools and students via the SWL state-wide portal, and once schools are registered users, teachers can view and access placements across all industries and regions.
Teachers can also access the teacher portal here.

Gateway LLEN provides all schools within its boundaries training and registration on the portal and schools are able to directly access all our employer opportunities.‍

Benefits to schools

Structured workplace learning benefits schools by:

  • Catering for a diverse range of students and learning needs

  • Providing a relevant curriculum which develops in students skills appropriate for life-long learning
  • Providing links with Local Learning and Employment Networks (LLENs), Workplace Learning Coordinator (WLC) services, local government, industry, unions, education and training providers to maximise employment and training outcomes for young people.

Testimonial

“… I would like to thank you for being such a support to me this year. Taking care of, and finding placements for teenage boys (without having any connections in the country myself!) was a very daunting task. Once I linked in with Gateway LLEN, I realised the support network that was available to me. .. you come to our school to meet with me and talk me through the process, you took the time to listen to the boys stories. You have been instrumental in finding the best possible outcomes for our boys; many of whom do not have the family connections (or even any connections on Australia) to find placements for them.

The boys felt empowered to take charge of their placements through the email/CV/phone call process you have used with them. I have noticed a shift in their confidence, they are standing a little bit taller and feel more engaged in their TAFE courses and in the classroom as a result of being able to finally put into practise (or APPLY) their learning to a trade -which is what VCAL is all about!! One student in particular has been lifted out of the fog of uncertainty, he knows now that he has the ability to work for an Australian employer and in the future he may be able to provide for his brother. This is all down to the connection that Salesian College has established with Gateway LLEN. As his EAL teacher wrote to me ‘you and Gateway have changed this boy’s life’. Don’t underestimate the great things that all of you do at Gateway, you are really making a difference in our community by changing the lives of our boys for the better.”
