In Victoria, students can complete the VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education) in the traditional academic way, or take the VCE Vocational Major (VM) pathway, which combines practical learning with workplace experience.
Gateway LLEN’s purpose is to help you, your student, schools, and employers make these pathways meaningful through Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) and industry connections.
Understanding the difference: VCE vs VCE VM
| VCE (Traditional) | VCE Vocational Major (VM) |
|---|---|
| Academic and theory-based | Hands-on and practical |
| Assessment via exams and school-assessed coursework (SACs) | Assessment via projects, portfolios, and practical tasks – no exams |
| Students receive an ATAR for university entry | No ATAR; pathway is toward TAFE, apprenticeships, or employment |
| Classroom-based learning |
In short: both pathways lead to a VCE certificate.
The key difference is how you or your student learn and where the focus lies – academic theory versus practical skills and real-world experience.
Why Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) matters
For VCE VM students, SWL is a core part of the program. It’s not just “work experience” – it’s an opportunity for you or your student to:
- Explore career options and discover interests
- Build practical skills and confidence in a real workplace
- Understand employer expectations and develop professionalism
If you or your student are completing traditional VCE, SWL is optional. Many still choose to participate to gain valuable career insight and employability skills.
At Gateway LLEN, we support you, your student, and schools in connecting to SWL opportunities, and we work with employers to provide meaningful placements that align with interests and goals.
How Gateway LLEN helps
Our role is to bridge schools and workplaces, making sure you or your student can:
- Access safe, relevant SWL placements
- Gain exposure to a variety of industries, from health and community services to trades and technology
- Build skills and networks that make post-school pathways clearer and more achievable
We also support employers, helping them design placements that provide you or your student with a real understanding of the workplace while developing skills and confidence.
Choosing the right pathway
VCE might be the right choice if you or your student:
- Enjoy academic study and exams
- Want to pursue university directly
- Thrive in classroom-based learning
VCE VM could be better if you or your student:
- Learn best by doing and applying knowledge
- Want to explore careers, apprenticeships, or TAFE
- Benefit from real-world work experiences and skill-building
Both pathways are respected, valid, and supported – the best choice depends on learning style, goals, and aspirations.
