The Victorian Tunnelling Centre at Holmesglen Institute.
As part of this year’s Reimagining Work Experience initiative, Gateway LLEN took a group of Year 10 students from schools across Whitehorse, Manningham, and Monash on an exciting hands-on tour of the Victorian Tunnelling Centre at Holmesglen Institute.
The unique facility – designed to prepare Victorians for careers on major infrastructure projects like the Metro Tunnel, Suburban Rail Loop, and North East Link – offered students a real-world glimpse into the world of tunnelling, surveying, and advanced construction.
Throughout the day, students explored life-sized replica tunnels, visited a refuge chamber, and engaged with cutting-edge virtual and augmented reality simulations that brought the scale and complexity of underground construction to life.

New to this year’s experience was an exciting drone demonstration led by pilot and surveying expert Baden, who gave students insight into how drone technology is transforming modern surveying practices.
Through interactive activities, students learned how drones assist in mapping, data collection, and project planning – highlighting the growing demand for tech-savvy professionals in the field.
The day was delivered in partnership with Surveying Task Force and Holmesglen Institute, reinforcing the strong connection between industry, education, and emerging careers.
By the end of the session, students walked away with a deeper appreciation for the dynamic and evolving opportunities in infrastructure, surveying, and construction – many of which are available through TAFE and apprenticeship pathways.
